Customized 200kg/h Black Truffle Washing and Drying Line Delivered to Australia
Joyshine recently completed and shipped a customized 200kg/h black truffle washing and drying line to Australia. The equipment was designed for a local truffle grower who needed a more efficient and gentle solution for post-harvest truffle cleaning.
Black truffles are high-value agricultural products. Unlike common root vegetables, truffles have an irregular surface, delicate outer skin, and deep crevices where soil and sand can easily remain after harvesting. Manual cleaning is slow and labor-intensive, while ordinary vegetable washing machines may be too aggressive and cause surface damage.
After understanding the customer’s processing requirements, Joyshine designed a customized line combining soft brush drum washing, multi-angle water spraying, and ambient air drying. The goal was to improve cleaning efficiency while protecting the appearance and commercial value of the black truffles.
Customer Background
The customer operates a truffle orchard in Australia. During the harvest season, the daily processing volume increases quickly, and manual washing becomes difficult to keep up with production.
The customer required a washing and drying solution with a capacity of around 200kg/h. At the same time, the equipment had to meet several important requirements:
- Remove mud and sand from irregular truffle surfaces
- Clean the crevices without damaging the outer skin
- Reduce manual washing labor
- Avoid high-temperature drying
- Keep the truffles suitable for packaging and cold-chain transportation
- Provide a compact and practical layout for the customer’s workshop
Based on these requirements, Joyshine’s technical team developed a customized truffle washing and drying line.
Why Standard Vegetable Washers Were Not Suitable
Many standard vegetable washing machines are designed for common fruits, leafy vegetables, potatoes, carrots, or other root vegetables. However, black truffles require a more careful handling method.
For example, strong brush washing may clean the surface quickly, but it may also scratch or damage the truffle skin. High-pressure washing alone may not fully remove soil from deep grooves. Hot air drying may cause surface cracking or affect the natural aroma of the truffles.
Because of these special characteristics, Joyshine did not simply recommend a standard machine. Instead, the equipment structure was adjusted according to the physical features of black truffles and the customer’s processing capacity.
Customized Rotary Drum Brush Washing Machine
The first key part of this processing line is the rotary drum brush washing machine.
To protect the black truffles, Joyshine used medium-density soft bristles inside the drum. During operation, the drum rotates slowly, allowing the truffles to move gently while the soft brushes clean the surface.
Compared with traditional strong-friction washing, this design provides a more controlled and delicate cleaning effect. It helps remove mud and sand from the uneven surface while reducing the risk of skin damage.
The washing section is also equipped with multi-angle spray nozzles. Water is sprayed from different directions to improve cleaning coverage, especially for soil hidden in the crevices of the truffles.
This combination of soft brushing and water spraying makes the cleaning process more effective and suitable for high-value delicate produce.
Ambient Air Drying Tunnel
After washing, surface moisture must be removed before packaging or cold-chain storage. However, black truffles cannot be dried in the same way as many ordinary vegetables.
High-temperature air may cause cracking, quality loss, or aroma changes. Therefore, Joyshine designed a customized ambient air-drying tunnel for this project.
The drying tunnel uses multiple axial fans arranged on the top and sides of the tunnel. As the truffles move along the stainless steel mesh belt, uniform ambient airflow removes surface moisture gently and efficiently.
This drying method helps prepare the truffles for the next processing step without applying heat. It also helps reduce manual wiping and improves the overall efficiency of post-harvest handling.
