Joyshine provided a customized turmeric washing, cutting, and drying line for a customer in Fiji. The solution was designed to clean freshly harvested turmeric, cut it into uniform pieces, and achieve consistent batch drying while preserving its natural color.

The complete system combines brush washing, high-pressure spray rinsing, uniform cutting, and a 48-tray electric heating dryer. It is suitable for farms, agricultural cooperatives, and small to medium-sized food processing facilities that want to improve the consistency of their turmeric processing operation.

Customer Requirements

Fresh turmeric harvested from farms normally carries soil, sand, and fine impurities on its irregular surface. Before cutting and drying, the customer needed an efficient washing system that could remove these contaminants without excessively damaging the turmeric.

The customer also wanted the turmeric to be cut into relatively uniform pieces. Consistent cutting size is important because pieces of different thicknesses may dry at different speeds, resulting in uneven final moisture.

The main requirements of the Fiji customer included:

  • Effective removal of soil and surface impurities
  • Gentle processing to reduce damage to the turmeric
  • Uniform cutting before drying
  • Consistent drying across different trays
  • Good preservation of the natural turmeric color
  • Practical operation for regular batch production
  • Equipment suitable for tropical agricultural processing conditions

After reviewing the customer’s raw material and production requirements, Joyshine recommended a complete washing, cutting, and tray-drying solution.

Processing Challenges of Fresh Turmeric

Turmeric is more difficult to process than vegetables with smooth and regular surfaces.

Fresh turmeric rhizomes have an irregular shape with many grooves and recessed areas where soil can remain. Simple water rinsing may not be strong enough to remove firmly attached dirt.

Fresh turmeric also has relatively high moisture content. If the turmeric pieces are too thick or inconsistent in size, hot air cannot pass through the material evenly, which may extend drying time and produce inconsistent results.

The Joyshine solution therefore focused on three important processing points:

  1. Thorough cleaning of irregular turmeric surfaces
  2. Uniform cutting before tray loading
  3. Controlled and consistent electric heating during drying

Joyshine’s Customized Turmeric Processing Solution

1. Brush Washing and High-Pressure Spray Rinsing

The first processing stage uses a brush roller washing system combined with high-pressure water spraying.

As the turmeric moves through the washing section, the rotating brushes help loosen and remove soil from the irregular rhizome surface. The spray nozzles then rinse away the remaining dirt and fine impurities.

Compared with simple soaking or manual rinsing, this configuration provides stronger cleaning performance for root crops with heavy soil.

Joyshine can customize the washing section as part of a complete vegetable and fruit washing processing line according to the raw material, soil condition, required capacity, and factory layout.

2. Uniform Turmeric Cutting

After washing, the clean turmeric enters the cutting stage.

The cutting machine processes the turmeric into relatively uniform strips or pieces. Consistent cutting size allows hot air to move more evenly around the product during drying.

Uniform cutting can help:

  • Reduce the difference in drying speed between pieces
  • Improve final product consistency
  • Make tray loading more organized
  • Reduce over-drying of small pieces
  • Reduce under-drying of thick pieces
  • Prepare the dried turmeric for further grinding or packaging

Joyshine’s vegetable cutting machine can be equipped with different blades according to the required cutting shape and thickness.

3. Manual Tray Loading

After cutting, the turmeric pieces are distributed across the drying trays.

The material should be spread in a relatively even layer instead of being piled too thickly. Proper tray loading helps hot air reach more of the product surface and supports consistent moisture removal.

The loading thickness, cutting size, initial moisture, target moisture, and drying temperature can all affect the total drying time.

4. 48-Tray Electric Heating Dryer

The main drying equipment selected for this project was a 48-tray electric heating dryer.

The tray-type structure provides a practical solution for batch processing. Operators can load the cut turmeric onto individual trays and place the trays inside the drying chamber.

The electric heating system provides controlled drying conditions and is convenient for facilities that prefer electricity as the heating source.

The main advantages of this drying configuration include:

  • Controlled drying temperature
  • Organized multi-tray loading
  • Consistent batch processing
  • Easy observation and operation
  • Flexible loading for different products
  • Suitable for small and medium-sized agricultural processors

Because the turmeric has already been cut into relatively uniform pieces, hot air can pass through the material more effectively, helping improve drying consistency.

Recommended Processing Flow

The processing flow used for this type of turmeric project is:

Fresh Turmeric Receiving → Brush Washing → High-Pressure Spray Rinsing → Uniform Cutting → Manual Tray Loading → Electric Heating Drying → Final Inspection

Additional equipment can be added according to the customer’s final product requirements, including:

  • Raw material sorting tables
  • Feeding conveyors
  • Additional spray rinsing sections
  • Finished-product cooling areas
  • Grinding machines
  • Powder sieving machines
  • Weighing and packaging machines

Customer Test Results

During the customer’s processing test, approximately 100 kg of fresh turmeric was loaded for one batch.

The drying process took approximately 13 hours. After drying, the turmeric maintained a natural color and achieved relatively uniform dryness across the batch.

The customer commented:

“The drying result is very good, and the color is well preserved.”

The test showed that combining proper washing, uniform cutting, controlled tray loading, and electric heating drying could provide a practical solution for the customer’s turmeric processing requirements.

Benefits of the Complete Processing Line

The Fiji turmeric processing project demonstrates several advantages of using an integrated washing, cutting, and drying solution.

Improved Cleaning Consistency

Brush washing and high-pressure spraying provide stronger cleaning performance for turmeric with soil attached to its irregular surface.

More Uniform Cutting

Consistent cutting size prepares the turmeric for more even drying and improves finished-product uniformity.

Controlled Batch Drying

The 48-tray dryer allows the customer to organize the product into separate trays and control the drying process more easily.

Better Color Preservation

Suitable drying conditions help reduce unnecessary overheating and support preservation of the turmeric’s natural yellow-orange color.

Flexible Processing

The equipment configuration can be adjusted according to different batch sizes, cutting requirements, heating methods, and factory conditions.

Suitable Applications

Although this project was designed for turmeric processing, a similar configuration can also be adapted for other firm agricultural products and root crops, including:

  • Kava
  • Cassava
  • Taro
  • Other products requiring washing, cutting, and tray drying

Different raw materials require different brush materials, washing intensity, cutting blades, drying temperatures, and drying times. Testing the actual product before finalizing the equipment configuration is therefore recommended.
